I did some research and for some reason (probably a newer Mac) I was able to reformat her WD My Book to OS Extended with no problem. I went home and checked my backup and realized I too had the same problem but I could not get it to format to anything but FAT32 until I read your article. Hey, I'm having problems with my 1 TB WD My Book Essential Drive (External USB HDD). I've only had it for a couple months and now it's not showing up on my Macbook Pro. I checked Disk Utility to see if it shows up there and it doesn't. What happens is I plug in my drive to power and the drive starts spinning up. That's all that happens, there's no lights indicating that it is doing something or even on. I then plug it into my Macbook Pro and nothing happens still.
My computer doesn't notice the drive and the drive doesn't realize it is connected to a computer. After 30 minutes or so, the drive shows a white light meaning that it is on, but nothing after that. No matter how many times I unplug it/ plug it in or even switch cables, the drive still doesn't want to be recognized. I really don't think the drive is damaged as I've been able to access data on it before and haven't done anything to it that would physically damage the drive since then. I did plug in this drive to my Xbox 360 and customized it to be used as an external hard drive, but all my data was retained (I checked after doing it).
I don't know if that would have an effect on it, but even then, when I plugged it back into my computer, it would take 30 min or so before my Mac would even mount the drive (it did recognize it as a device though). Any help would be appreciated. If you need any additional info, let me know.
Hi Everyone, I have had a WD My Book 2TB/USB2 version for just over a year and started having some very strange problems in the last month. The permissions keep changing to I can only Read and not write files to it.

It seems random whenever my drive mounts and whether it works or not. Now, it just doesn't want to work at all no matter what I try.
I did try shutting my computer down again after you said that while praying that for some cosmic reason my drive would start working again. Unfortunately, it didn't. Thanks for your reply though.
I might just have to ring up WD tech support in hopes they can help me. My worry is that they will just say they have no clue what it is and that I should send it in. Drivers Wanted Hey, Apple support and WD support are both worthless here, nowhere I got to find a hint about this, but after timeless hours spent on rebooting, fixing permissions and other useless 'tricks', I found out that: 1 - WD My Book does not work with 10.6 in FireWire 800, only USB connection works 2- there is a driver needed for 10.6 too, even this driver specs only mentions 10.4 and 10.5. You can download and install WDDriveManager from: It has fixed this issue on both my old MacBook Pro (Intel core 2 Duo) and my MacMini (brand new) connected to 2 different MyBook Models (one Essential 500GB and one Premium 1TB edition) so I guess it's pretty universal I guess.

What's your backup plan?:
Protect your precious memories and important files
You've taken the time to create it or capture it — everything that matters to you, from financial to sentimental. But you're just one system error, one spilled latte, one stolen backpack away from losing it all.
If it matters to you, make a second copy!
Like a jet plane with more than one engine you need a backup. If your files are backed up and an important file is lost, you can relax because you have a copy.
Make it automatic. Set it and forget it.
You don't have to think about backup everyday if you use automatic backup software that does the work for you.WD offers WD SmartWare Pro automatic backup software that makes it easy to back up your important files on your schedule. With WD SmartWare Pro you can select one or both of the following two options:
Wd My Book For Mac Os Versions
- Automatic, continuous backup to back up files as soon as they are added or changed and saved
- Scheduled backup that allows you to pick the time, day and frequency that you back up your files.
Upgrade to WD SmartWare Pro!
Upgrade to WD SmartWare Pro for even more backup options. WD SmartWare Pro allows users to back up files to their Dropbox account or even to a non-WD external hard drive.
* Dropbox account required for cloud backup. Cloud services may be changed, terminated or interrupted at any time and may vary by country.
Be selective
Protect the files you create yourself whether they are text documents, e-mail messages, pictures, music, videos or game saves. If you made them, you want to save them and keep them nearby.
You don't have to back up your entire system – a time consuming task that duplicates the issues you've built up over time on your hard drive. If your system fails, use the original copies of your software programs and reinstall your operating system to get a fresh start.
Back up to an external drive.
You can back up to CDs or DVDs, but this is a slow, manual process. And contrary to popular belief, most CDs and DVDs are not permanent. Low-priced CDRs may not be readable in as few as two years and thumb drives are small, lower capacities, and easy to lose.
The best backup medium is an external hard drive. It takes stacks of CDs or DVDs and handfuls of thumb drives to back up all the data that could be stored on a single external hard drive. WD SmartWare Pro makes it easy to back up to an external hard drive. High-capacity external drives are fast and allow you to keep all your backed up data in one place. For extra safety, get a two-drive external storage system and dedicate half the capacity for mirroring to automatically and instantaneously back up your backup every time. WD's external hard drives are sleek, stylish, made for your grab-and-go lifestyle and most come with our easy-to-use backup software... so let WD be your backup plan!
